Here at Cottage Rental Getaways we help people find the perfect cottage for their vacation every day. We’ve gotten pretty good at putting people in the best cottages suited to their needs and we’d like to share some tips with you on picking the perfect getaway cottage.
Always take the time to ask the important questions to both the group you will be sharing the cottage with and the owners or agents of the cottage to ensure you are getting what you want and need! You may not always get exactly what you want and you should be prepared to compromise but make sure you compromise on things that will not ruin your holiday!
Here are the things to consider when choosing the right cottage for your getaway:
Size
Once you determine the exact number of people going to the cottage, you can then decide how many bedrooms you’ll need. Many cottages have multiple beds in each bedroom sometimes sleeping 4-6 people to a bedroom. Will this work for your group or will you need more private bedrooms? Many cottages will count pull-out couches in living rooms as well which means that some people may not have a bedroom at all.
Amenities
Another simple way to narrow down the options for cottages is to decide on what services and amenities are most important to you. Do you require laundry facilities? Air Conditioner? Dishwasher? TV? WIFI? Cell Reception? Many cottages do not supply linens and towels or provide cleaning services. Is this important to you? Some cottages provide paddle boats, canoes or kayaks to use during your stay. Will your group make use of these?
Rates
Once you’ve established your budget, be sure to ask if there are any extras on top of the listed rental price. Is there HST? Booking Fees? Cleaning or Pet Fees? Is there a damage deposit and when does it need to be paid, and when will it be returned?
Pets
Want to bring your dog to the cottage with you? Be sure to ask if the cottage is pet friendly and if there is a surcharge to bring your furry friend.
The Great Outdoors
Properties come in all shapes and sizes! Some cottages are perched up high on a hill. This makes for the best views but will walking up and down the stairs several times a day be a problem for you? What type of shoreline are you looking for? Walk in swimming? Swimming off the dock? Want to do some fishing? Ask how the fishing is off the dock, in the boat, and what types of fish will you catch. Will you need a fishing license? Can you rent a motor boat, canoes or kayaks locally? Do they deliver? Have your own boat? Is there dock space for your boat?
The Kids
If you are bringing children, what age group are they and will the cottage fit their needs? Will small children need a grassy area to play? Is there a place to put up badminton nets or other outdoor games? Have toddlers? Be sure to ask if the cottage can easily be baby proofed or if the property is suitable for unsteady walkers.
